The tank was probably about 18 litres. On long trips you tend to fill the tank every time you stop. 2) The bike was a Honda Hornet 900 (CB900F). At 900cc, it's at the upper end of the 'mid-size' bikes. 3) This data was from a trip (Sydney - Tasmania & return). Note the first & last couple of days make up a large chunk of the total (Sydney - Melbourne). Melbourne to Tasmania is a bit tricky... 4) I don't know about the alternator, they're typically fairly small as motorcycles don't have much in the way of electrics. Basically a 50/50 watt headlight, tail light (20w), blinkers (4x20w) & dash lights. I'd be surprised if it was bigger than 250 watts, say 20 amps. They need high RPM (say >5000) to get that. You can see the headlight dim at idle (~1,000 RPM). You're not going to crack much water that way. I don't think those numbers are abnormal, the variations are exaggerated by the (deliberate) formatting of the graph (see new version), and the fact that data was recorded at irregular intervals. If you measured it at the same time every day or after using a specified quantity of fuel, it might even out a bit. If you have been recording the fuel usage for you car (and you must have to claim a 10-20% saving), then I'd wager yours will be similar. No-one can drive in exactly the same way all the time. This is especially true of motorcycle riders, they tend to ride somewhat aggressively. Even in a static situation (dyno), you get a 1-2% variation. You simply cannot get precise measurements, and I'd be very wary of anyone who claims they do. Beside, any statistician will tell you that the data means nothing - the sample size is too small. 20 km/l is about typical for a bike of that class (btw, we are talking metric, so that's 43 mpg), plus I had a passenger & gear. Much of it was at highway speeds (110 km/h - 70 mph). This site gives some numbers on fuel usage. I don't see anything on there I'd disagree with. That's on par with some small cars. Note that by simply dropping to a 250cc bike your fuel economy will go to about 30 km/l (70 mpg). By riding my 250 in a more gentle manner (boring) I can easily get 40 km/l (95 mpg). Fuel economy is the last thing motorcycle manufacturers worry about - they don't care, and neither do the riders. You solve that 'problem' by buying a bigger tank. Many motorcycles are the same basic design as they were 30 years ago, this is especially true of smaller 'commuter' bikes. Development goes to the race bikes. For instance, the Hornet uses the same engine as the CBR (Fireblade), but detuned to produce less power, but not necessarily less fuel. If the Fireblade didn't exist, then the Hornet would have a old engine design. Actually, the Hornet wouldn't have existed, it was just an excuse to use the engine.
