:: Why won't an on demand label printer suffice? Put a thermal :: transfer :: label (ie, not temp sensitive) printer where you need the marking :: done :: (or carry the battery operated portable label printer) and just :: press :: a button for another label. Or, why not get something along the lines of an ancient inkjet printer that allows access to the ink cartridge the old BJ200 /HP 500 series springs to mind. Another idea, which could get a PIC involved is to grab one of those cartridges, and drive it directly via a microcontroller. Would only need to be the size of the cartridge plus a very small board and power. I think some one did this and produced an article in Elektor a couple of years back. Surplus product packing printers would also do what you want.
