Digikey are a good place to look early on as - Their parametric search is reasonably good and they have a wide range of parts and a good range of suppliers and most component pages provide ready access to a good data sheet. Their prices are variable - typically better than the hobby oriented suppliers, and in volume they are sometimes excellent and sometimes only OK. They have recently started providing free freight on orders over about $NZ120 which is worthwhile from places afar off, like eg New Zealand :-).
