This is one of the important questions! Right now in the US coal produces close to half of all our electricity. It makes no sense to burn more coal and petroleum to produce electricity and then throw away a good portion of that energy to produce hydrogen. Even if nuclear power was used to produce hydrogen, it still wouldn't make sense.
