The advantage is the voltage can be set from about 2 - 36 volts. The datasheet calls it programmable, yet the voltage is set by a resistive voltage divider not unlike linear 3-terminal regulators. These little beasties actually make a nifty audio amp as well, directly driving an 8 ohm speaker or headset.
