I've installed Windows XP about 5 times in the last month on different computers. It's a jiffy! When someone's computer is "riddled with viruses", here's what I do: * Get the data off it, either via FTP over a cross-over cable, or by opening the chasis and using my handy USB to ATA adapter (which by the way was only about 5euro on eBay and works perfectly, extremely fast transfer speed) * Next I take out the "Ultimate Boot CD". I open up Ranish Partition Manager and I delete all partitions and give it the standard master boot record. * If the computer is to only have one partition, then I can just reboot off the XP CD now. However if there's to be separate partitions then I create them now because I don't want the problem of the XP CD not treating the target partition as C: * So anyway, I install XP * Turn off System Restore (or System ReWhore as I like to call it :-D) * Copy across AVG anti-virus via FTP from my laptop * Run Windows Update to get Service Pack 3 as well as all the updated drivers and patches * Then I've a myriad of little installation programs, stuff like AVG Anti-virus, Adobe PDF reader. * Lastly, change the skin to Silver! If there's a gig of RAM, I also turn off the page file. I can't for the life of me understand why someone with a gig of RAM has a page file. I remember one time I actually TRIED to tax my Windows XP system. I opened up about 10 different web pages, some of them with YouTube videos on them. Next I opened up every part of MS Office, then opened up a load of more programs too. My max memory usage peak was between 600 and 700 megs. So no thank you I don't want a page file. -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
