have a look at the Analog Devices ADXLxxx range of devices. They certainly 
have some in the $3 - $6 (and higher if you want) range. You can purchase 
direct from AD IIRC.

Freescale also make some, search for the MMAxxxx series of devices (although 
I don't know their prices) as well as application notes such as AN1611 and 
AN1612 (among others).
