For instance, when you have three pins left, it's relatively easy to expand those into 8, 16, or more "low speed" outputs using shift registers or SPI "expanders." Likewise, there are schemes for expanding input pins using A-D converters that are much more straight-forward than the schemes we're talking about for driving two LEDs from one pin....
