For many PICs, the "E" grade > would be required for -40C. 0 to 70 degC = commercial range -40 to 85 degC = industrial range -40 to 125 degC = extended range AFAIK, all Microchip parts follow this temperature rating system (most other semi mfg's use the same ranges for commercial and industrial designations). So I believe all I and E range parts are OK to -40, of course check the data sheet for a specific part to be certain.
