Back when I was a chemist, a girl in our lab had a propensity for breaking thermometers in the small controlled-environment room. Or "Janice's Death Chamber" as it was known. Even with a pocketful of stainless steel spatulas and glass rods she'd still rather use a fragile thermometer as a stirrer.
