I was going to suggest FireWire, which I used for the same purpose 
(transferring very large files b/w laptop and home PC). But if OP has 
gigabit NICs in both computers, he just needs a crossover cable. I'm too 
lazy to compare the overheads, but my intuition tells me Gigabit Ethernet is 
at least as fast as 800 Mbit/s IEEE1394.
