Many Unix/Linux programmers I know prefers lightweight window manager, blackbox. They do not need fancy gadgets, only something that allows them to open many terminal windows to run vim + gdb... But that's the beauty of linux, isn't it? To have more than one choice and to be able to use the window manager you like.
