I think if you are a 100% software shop that does branches, merging, and maintains multiple distributed trees, git is the way to go. It can handle the Linux kernel, (and originally written by Linus) so it's quite robust. But for someone with a single mainline that doesn't need to maintain distributed versions, git is too complicated, and the cost of training staff would be too much.
