Check any large electrolytic capacitors around the cpu socket for signs like bulging tops of the cans or the rubber plug on the bottom being half pushed out. There was a rash of this sort of problem with motherboards of that sort of age. You may be able to replace them but be aware that desoldering them is likely to be a pain. Does it beep on power up? If so then your cpu is probably happy but the video card isn't.
