Subversion is open source, very active, has wide platform support, 
integrates nicely with Windows Explorer, is designed for efficiency, and 
integrates well with Trac if you're interested in that (and I love it).

Does fine with binary files, including MPLab and Eagle.  And I know 
TortoiseSVN (the Windows client) handles diffing Open Office documents 
automatically.
