With tar + gzip you can do the following under linux: $ targ cvzf file.tgz dir/* On Win, however, for some reason that does not work, so you have to have a workaround, like this: C:\> tar cv dir\*.* | gzip > file.tgz ...therefore, the following works for me fine: C:\>FOR /D %G IN (*.*) DO tar cv "%G\*.*" | gzip > "BACKUP_%G.gz" If that does not work check what tar + gzip version you have, mine is: C:\>gzip --version gzip 1.2.4 (18 Aug 93) Compilation options: DIRENT SYS_UTIME STDC_HEADERS HAVE_UNISTD_H NO_CHOWN PROTO ASMV C:\>tar --version tar (GNU tar) 1.12 Copyright (C) 1988, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
