There are low-speed high-reliability physical layer protocols available that work with CAN, but I don't know the ranges. FWIW, as long as it's point to point, RS422 drivers should work with a CAN controller and a little glue logic. CAN is mostly a higher level protocol that takes over much of the message handling, and possibly you won't gain that much in point to point communication.
