I would normally look at the transistor with the flat side facing me (so that I could read the type), and thus call the 3904 an "EBC" transistor (which is the most common in the US.) And yet, the fairchild picture shows the transistor "upside down" (by my reckoning), and I've seen other data sheets that first NUMBER the leads (3,2,1 as I look at them) and make you got through another level of possible error inducing lookup as you find which number fits which function.
