Either one.  They call it "I/O Line Passing" when you set the pin 
externally, and it's described in section 2.2.6 of my copy of the XBee 
datasheet (2006.10.13).  (This is for the Version 1 XBee modules - I 
haven't looked at the Version 2 ones yet to see if the API is any 
different.)

Yes, it does.  And you can set it up to echo an A/D input, so with 
proper filtering it will mirror the voltage on the local node to the 
remote node without any external microcontroller or custom code.
