I was serious to the extent that what I offered was a useful and direct extension of what was being discussed. I've never used Excel as a font bit mapper, but I have created patterns for various purposes both in a spread sheet and for external use, using the method that I described. There are almost certainly dozens of ways to more elegantly do any of the things that you could do that way. But as a bottom end way of manually controlling coloured arbitrary bits on a bitmap pattern it does work and is accessible to many.
