How large is "rather large" If up to about 8 GB is ok then read on. Generic cheap and available SD "camera" Flash seems like a good choice. Up to a certain size it has a serial SPI mode - and above that it may. At all sizes it has a nibble mode which probably isn't too much harder to drive. AFAIK a number of people here have interfaced to SD OK. Including our beloved list owner James if memory serves.
