I simply never left my laptop alone. It hibernates, so it's easy to simply close the lid, toss everything in the backpack, go use the restroom or whatever, and then when I get back open it up and everything is as it was when I closed it. I lose perhaps 1 minute each time picking everything up and putting it back out, but compared to the time and data I'd lose since the last backup it's nothing. There are other alerting options as well - one program uses the hard drive accelerometers to determine if the laptop is being moved, and if so it can perform user based actions (volume to high, screech, close open encrypted documents, lock computer, take pictures with camera and send over wifi to website, etc). But at the end of the day, if you leave it out of your sight there's a reasonable chance someone will take it. It's like safes - they are never rated as "unbreakable" they are rated in how long it takes to break them under certain conditions and assumptions. So decide how long you need to leave the laptop unmonitored, how much it is worth to you (hardware, software, and data), and then secure it accordingly. Good luck! -Adam On 4/16/08, Tamas Rudnai wrote: > Hi Everyone, > > I was just thinking of buying a security cable to protect my laptop, but > then I started to watch videos on youtube how easy is to break those: > > ...cut the cable - what kind of material did they use to make this cord > from?! > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUKP8h3OSfw > > ...or use a toilet paper > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SkKJ4yOKo8 > > ...or simply just pull-and-run > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge6sh4srzbI > > > So now I am still wondering how and what to use for protecting my laptop? > > Thanks > Tamas > > > -- > Rudonix DoubleSaver > http://www.rudonix.com > -- > http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive > View/change your membership options at > http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist > -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Moving in southeast Michigan?
