I don't think you need the bit about the hobbyist, it makes it somewhat more ambiguous. (see video of the guy who made his own vacuum tubes ;->) Stuff with electrons in is a good place to start. I think most people would be clever enough to be able to determine what would fit into EE and into some other Eng category.
