Just test with a PIC18F458 hex code on the new released PICkit2 "programmer-to-go" feature, it works great. 
So the engineer dream finally comes true. 

With our BB0703 design, it is so convenient to connect the programmer with an external wall-mount power supply.

After a quick look on Microchip's user guide, and I find it is quite interesting that Microchip allow user replace the 24LC512(s) with 24LC1025(s), and double the EEPROM from 128K to 256K bytes. It is not convenient, but it does provide some programmer-to-go capability for high-end chips which need more than 128K bytes of space..
