As an apposite example, the current US official take on "separation of church and state" must have the founders in a state of ever increasing high speed rotation. The longer term consequences of such a stance can be seen by looking across the way to see how your nations founders are faring in consequence of having taken previously taken a similarly enlightened stand. Foundations and foundational aims are not necessarily optimal, and the various US constitutional amendments in part sought to remedy this. But where vested and/or unstated interests are allowed to creep in, and it's human nature for this to happen, then the outcomes are predictable. A 'win' today that frees you from an apparent evil is often the open door to a far greater one. Give it another 100 years or so (maybe 50) and your new ruler will be Great. [Lest the preceding be unclear I'm not largely talking about any claimed current administrative fascist tendencies].
