Want to build / buy a 30 TerraWatt hour annually 'system' covering an all up 800 km x 800 km land area - read on. __________________ Floating Solar Chimney Click "next" at top right of image for 30 or so image presentation. http://www.floatingsolarchimney.gr/description1.htm PDF version http://www.floatingsolarchimney.gr/papers/description.pdf Claims capital costs per kW of below or well below any alternatives. 10% of photovoltaics cost in 2005. Solar powered but suggests plausible night time operation methods at reduced levels. Claims mature high volume systems could produce Hydrogen at 1.5c/kg [!!!!]. Basic principle demonstrated in Spanish pilot scale plant over some years BUT this variant uses a literally floating chimney. A 1 to 3 km high 70 to 100 meter diameter chimney surrounded by a 3 to 6 km^2 collector would be an impressive sight, at least. Efficiency depends on chimney height but in the 3%-5% range. Lower than many alternatives - which is accounted for in cost calculations. Construction at a land area per year of 20,000 square kilometres is suggested (!) 30 year target at 330GW/yr added capacity suggested as 600,000 km^2 land use giving 30 TerraWatt.hour energy annually - about 6x US usage from memory.
