But as usual I was looking at the trees and not the forest.  Getting back to
the forest, the new question is (for you mathematicians out there) has
anyone successfully compressed a complete 5*7 LCD font into 256 bytes of
EEPROM?

Yup, that's the problem. Bad dog Microchip, bad dog

The 'features' table in the datasheet shows 4k flash, 1 page
EEPROM

Doug, being able to write to program memory is very useful, for
user-input tables, text or dt strings etc that wouldn't fit in EEPROM
