It has been my experience that good engineering isn't about form vs. function, but about how to create the most elegant solution to a problem. Now, with that said, there are engineers who I have known that would rather "bang the thing out" - they are most frustrating lot to deal with because what happens is you end up coming back to that "banged out" product time and time again in order to fix the bugger. There is also the sad case when your hardware design is dictated by those with the least amount of knowledge to make those decisions. Many engineers have at least ONE product they worked on (if not more) where the processing power was inadequate for the design. Elegant designs are far more satisfying to my soul than form or function.
