I found 3 of these on a P.C. peripheral adaptor I was salvaging that had maybe 2 serial ports on it. The cans are oval just like a single quartz crystal can but squatty like some 16-meg crystals I bought from Jameco a few years ago. these cans have a combination of numbers and letters that appear to be a part number rather than a direct frequency. There are 3 leads on the bottom and the middle lead is grounded to the case. I am guessing they are just crystals with a grounded case but they could also be a full Can oscillator although those are usually about the size of a 14 or 16-pin DIP IC package with a pin or 2 at each corner. I almost forgot. On the bottom, one end of the package is rounded like the rest of the case but the other end has one square corner as if to mark orientation. If it is a crystal, orientation wouldn't matter as long as the center terminal was grounded. When I am trashing old mother boards and adapters, I usually yank all the EPROM's, jumpers and crystals/can oscillators if practical to do so because they can be reused. The same is true with cables and connectors especially those ribbon jumpers that go from DB9's and DB25's to headers.
