Screw down plugs, one per cell, coarsish thread.
O ring seals.
The enthused could add something to make these finger 
removable.
You could use Alkalines :-).
It's only MEANT to run on 3 x NimH but it will happily run 
on several times the voltage.
Preferably don't run it on more than about 9 volts :-).
