I trust that the Englishmen (and women) on this list will take this in
good humor - I have great respect for them (although some of my
not-so-distant ancestors were IRA members during the early part of the
1900s :)

Supposedly this witty comeback about the empire was first used by a
wise but illiterate Irishman (whose name I cannot remember). He also
supposedly had this conversation with a Church of England member who
visited his (Catholic) church:

Protestant man: I must say that your church looks very cluttered with
statues and paintings and such.

Catholic man: Well, sir, the oldest housekeeper has the most decorations!

Not a very theological argument, but funny!
