Yes, that stuff cats pee in when your sock drawer is closed. I was wandering thru the supermarket the other when I noticed there's a silica gel version. Apparently it works quite well as kitty litter, but I'm more interested in it as dessicant (aka little bags of 'Do Not Eat'). This stuff is crystal clear, not the brown clay stuff. It's cheap too, 2kg for under $AU10, say $2/lb for those who haven't progressed to metric yet. The only odd thing was the package stated 'the water will evaporate at room temperature, trapping the odors', but silica gel needs over 100 degree celcius to dry out. It probably doesn't have the pink/blue indicator either, so big drama. The crystals are bigger, less likely to be eaten I suppose. Anyone else come across this stuff? I figure it's easy enough to set up an experiment to see how well it works, and I'll probably do that after Easter unless someone has already tried it. Can't find much on the web. At the checkout I was amused to see that I and the two blokes in front all had our credit cards out. I would have checked the other queues but I didn't have my clipboard or white lab coat on (James gets a bit pissy otherwise), so I didn't. Anyway, I got distracted by the two women behind me who unloaded about 15 kilos of drain cleaner (some 30x500g tubs) on the conveyer belt. At around 55% strength, that's a lot of caustic soda. Nasty stuff, it'll eat paint, aluminium and you, or at least turn you into soap. I'm still wondered what on Earth they were going to do with it all.
