Just as a reality check, there is Sharps GH04P21A2G blue laser diode that emits 105mW at 5.4V, 120mA; about 16% efficient, while a royal blue luxeon 3 is rated 450mW at 3.9V, 1A or 12% efficient. I'd call that comparable and say it throws my original statement out the window...
