Redwood Shores, 10 maart 2008. Dear Jeff, http://www.futurlec.com has an inexpensive 2 lines of 8 characters display that is very small (smallest I've found so far, and it even allows you to hook up a LED for side lighting it). You can control it normally, using 4 data lines, one DS line and one Enable line (so 6 lines in total) or use an external shift register to move the data lines and the DS line in, reducing the number of lines to 3, or use Myke Predko's trick to reduce it to two (see http://www.myke.com). I have code for the PIC16F628A if you need it, but I'm sure there are plenty of resources for the 44780 controller. Note that a 1x16 version exists as well, but they are usually a lot bigger.
