Before "C" it was all MAD (Michigan Algorithm Decoder)
maybe still is:). 1960 University of Michigan, was suggested go to 
computer class, programming was integrated with Civil Engineering 
classes. I would liken MAD to Fortran, not as fancy.

 From K & R copyright 1978 introduction:
"C is not a "very high level" language, nor a "big one""

no other mention to high, low or between. :)
