Personal experience is difficult to be shared in two words. Lets try:
EPCS serial config memory is 100% compatible with the M25 series from ST.
Which is about 6 time less expensive.  The serial asincron
configuration is described somewhere here:

I always said the guys from Altera are doing the best to do our life
miserable...
