There are good C compilers around. But which ones are the good ones varies
with who you ask :) -- just check the list archives.

IMO it doesn't depend that much on the actual language than on the specific
compiler. A bad C compiler is just a bad compiler, and a good Basic
compiler is just a good compiler. Again, this topic is frequent and the
archives are full of good (and less good :) advice.
