I read a technical column during the week that started off with
a discussion on HD-DVD vs Blu-ray, basically tracking the
wins/losses of major players Toshiba, Philips and Sony. Blu-
ray has won as the next DVD standard

The second part of the article goes on about the PS3 -

"Ironically what pulled Blu-ray through was Sony's PS3, which
spent last year being derided as a flop, trounced in the video
gaming market by Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the surprise hit
Nintendo Wii. It shipped with a Blu-ray drive and there were
enough PS3 enthusiasts to decisively tilt the small market for
high-definition movie players. By the same token it's one in the
eye for MS which (along with Intel) backed HD-DVD....MS
is reported to be rushing a Blu-ray Xbox add-on"

It then goes on to the super wonderful things that the PS3 can
do for the consumer apart from gaming

"When I first saw the PS3 last year, it seemed a device of great,
but unfulfilled potential. Now, it appears it won't just be the kids
who cover one"
