If one takes a map of the US and rotates it 45 degrees so that SW is straight down, Imperial Beach isn't anywhere close to the lowest point - Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, and even Oxnard are all "further southwest." The problem is that the southern part of the US west coast isn't very far WEST.
