The manual says to debug I need: SXkey Rev E or greater, SX chip 9825 or later, no external clock, sxkey connected and sx system powered.

I have all of these (apart from the date code on the chip, how do i check that? Only just bought it though...)

It does mention it may be interfered with by background software, I'll try that, but i'm not running much.  any other ideas?
