The question of uses remains.  Ther are four features, but each can adapt to several uses.

1. PWM can also do PPM.  And I suspect two PWMs can do FSK 
2. Software timer can provide an alternative RTCC, but it could provide a more complex, feature  rich RTCC.
3. Capture/compare is really capture or compare
4. External can be directing to the RTCC interrupt and maybe to an output pin to put the MCLR pin low for another watchdog timer format.

You might investigate Microchip's Application Notes for PICs as they published tons of stuff that can be mined for ideas to present as tutorials.  Unlike Senix/Ubicom, they had lots of extra profit to spend on promo.
