I assume that you mean "for some values of replace".
For read-only that may be true.
For write-once and write-many it's (far) less clear.

I think that there were vanishingly few VCD recorders 
available here. And even now DVD recorders are not an 'every 
home has one' item, unlike VHS recorders.
