I use those tiny 0603/0805 ESD suppressors. While those rated for 5V would seem to be the best, they have a HUGE capacitance at that voltage rating. So I normally use 18-26V, which reduces the capacitance to 200pF or less. In any case, when driving an external signal, please consider the capacitance. I attach one to each PIC pin heading for the outside, or attached to any cable coming into the PIC.
