MIR =?  mid IR  ??  as in PIR?
UWB =? ultra wide band   ??

I've been pondering a PIR "radar" for my car to help pick out them pesky 
pedestrians at twilight. No range info though - maybe "team it up" with 
the gadget in the DIY article for range info.
