Take note that Atmel is also quite strong in low cost Arm7 and AVR32 MCUs. It seems to me high-end 8-bit MCUs (PIC18F) will lose market to lower end 16bit or 16/32bit MCUs. And to me Atmel is a great company in terms of technical aspect but not a great company when it comes to execution. Just compare Atmel to Microchip using Yahoo Finance.
