I was never able to get MPLAB8 or 8.01 to work with the ICD2, and spent 
days trying. I use WinXP
Pro. But apparently it is just me... nobody else is bitching about it.

ONE, and ONLY one, VERSION of MPLAB (7.4)  works perfectly. Download it 
from the MPLAB
archives, or let me know and I will send it to you.

BTW, if you use AVG Anti-virus + malware killer, it crushes  the ICD2 
running in USB mode just like
turning a switch to OFF.
