Though I don't recall the details of the router I mentioned before, I think it was really trying to speed up web browsing by spreading the load between two WAN ports. It might get the html for a page from one WAN port and images from another or, perhaps, look how "saturated" a WAN port is and send new requests out the less saturated port. It's been several years since I looked at data on that router, but it did look interesting at the time.
