Stuff I do "oft gang aglae":)  I tried again using a 116kB jpeg and got 
a 1167kB tiff
which seems to be correct.  In fact, I converted 100 files using 
IrfanView's batch
processing.  Resize and renamed 100+ files at once.  IrfanView rules!!!
