Lots of your numbers seem odd.  I exported some random jpgs from
iphoto in jpeg format, and most were only around 300k (nothing
over 500k.)  Converting to tiff with corel photo-paint gave me a
1.4M tiff file, which is about what I'd expect (600*800*3...)
