Reminds me of a study that was done in NZ at the time of the oil crisis in the 1970s, looking at usage of oil in sports. IIRC the study was initiated by the University of Canterbury Car Club, to see just how much of the sports consumption was by motor sport. All forms of Motor Sport combined (cars, boats, motor cycles, do not know if aeroplanes were included here) came 5th.
